Getting my head around long-form

Heading into the last six weeks of the semester now, feeling the burn right now. Doing what I can to take care of myself - eating, exercising, cooking at home, some sleep.

I'm realizing that some of that burn is coming from not being able to finish my long-form pieces. A lot of them have been on the back-burner for a considerable amount of time, and they're starting to pile up.

Ron Stodghill spoke in class today about planning the long-form piece. I think that's what has been missing: my game plan. I shot from the hip and assumed that the pieces would work out the way they're supposed to. Hard lesson here. You need a roadmap to get where you're going, even if you're not completely certain where that is yet.

I'm looping back around and writing outlines for some of my long pieces right now. It's amazing how a tiny bit of organization and structure can make it so much clearer what needs to happen to get to publication. Now I have very concrete steps I can take to make these stories everything they can be. Doesn't mean that it'll be easy to make some of these happen, but at least they're manageable now.

Time to execute.
